Almocageme – Surf, Sand, and Dinosaurs

Posted on May 4, 2018March 1, 2019

That’s right, dinosaurs.  Well, maybe 100 million years ago, but they did leave some footprints in the granite wall on the way to the beach.  Pretty cool.  The wall is vertical, so I’m guessing some weird geological events happened way back.  You know, volcanoes blowing up, freaked out dinos wondering why their tootsies are getting toasty, and big rocks being thrust up to make mountains.  A grand time to be alive.

And speaking of grand….that’s where we were today.  Praia Grande, a very nice beach surrounded by high cliffs.  Lots of sand, walkers, dogs, surfers, and some smallish waves today.  I’ve read though, that the highest recorded surfer waves (like 80 feet) occur here on this coast between Lisbon and Porto.  It was another long walk day, cutting through some back roads and long stretches of dirt paths to get here.  Better than the main roads though as there are not an abundance of sidewalks.

From this beach we clambered up the cliffs and made our way along the top via some hiking trails to get to the first beach we visited earlier in the week.  There were some pretty amazing views as you can see from the photos.  Definitely thirsty work, so we stopped for a beer at the Adraga restaurant.  That quickly turned into food cravings and well, we had a nice lunch there too.  It was a great way to end our stay in Almocageme and get ready for a more hectic pace in Lisbon tomorrow.  This area is just beautiful, and we will come back to this coast.  The dinosaurs would have liked it as well.  Not much hot lava here anymore.
