Cadiz – A Walk on the Promenade

Posted on May 10, 2019May 11, 2019

We had a 5-day stopover in Cadiz due to airBnB logistics.  Last year we mentioned that 3 days in Cadiz was probably more than enough and we’re sticking to that.  It’s pretty in Cadiz and the weather is very nice but there’s not a lot to do except eat out and it’s always overrun with cruise ship tourists.

The highlight for us was a day walk along the extensive promenade that almost encircles old/new Cadiz.    We didn’t make it as far as the nature preserve which would have been interesting I suppose, but we got lazy and by the 3rd day we were just waiting to get back to Jerez where the vibe is more friendly and our digs way nicer.

If you are in Cadiz on a cruise stop, by all means, check out the town and the history for a day.  But if you get a chance, go to Jerez as it’s only a 30-minute train ride (just under 40km) away.   It’s our opinion, but we could hang out in Jerez for 6 months.  Six more hours in Cadiz would have driven us bonkers.

The waterfront promenade runs all around the old town into the new past a long stretch of beaches for a length of about 5 Km.
The Castle of San Sebastián. . . a bird’s eye view.
The Castle of San Sebastián is a fortress located at the end of La Caleta beach on a small island accessible from the main city by a walkway. It was constructed in 1706 to defend the northern flank of the city from attack.
View of the Cádiz Cathedral from the waterfront promenade
The Cádiz Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Cruz de Cádiz) is a spectacular Roman Catholic church built between 1722 and 1838.

We see many happy dogs here
There is a very laid back vibe on the waterfront, away from the congested inner city streets of “old town”, which are usually crawling with tourists from the cruise ships.
