Ronda – Last Days

Posted on June 28, 2020September 16, 2020

The month has flown by!  We have been relaxed here as opposed to Marbella.  Covid is not a big issue in Ronda and other than everyone wearing masks, life is pretty much back to normal.  No tourists though which is why it is quiet but it is not good for the local economy. We will be sorry to leave although it is getting a little warm for our tastes…the thermometer currently sitting at 38C.   We managed to rebook our last KLM flight and so we are in Malaga for a week and then home on July 10th via Amsterdam and Toronto.  Nobody has cancelled…yet.

We haven’t done too much as stores and restaurants were closed or only partially open until 2 weeks ago.  Walk abouts were restricted to the evening before but now they are still restricted to the evenings because it’s too damn hot to go out during the day.  We did manage a couple of at home meals with our hosts Charo and Antonio and even a restaurant with them a couple of days ago.  Our first meal out since February.  After some kitchen scissor trimming attempts, we even scored ‘professional’ haircuts 2 weeks ago…I should be good for another 2 years now!

We had a great lunch at Charo and Antonio’s place. The menu consisted of homemade paella, a spanish shakshuka (eggs and potatoes), salmorejo with chopped tomatoes and cucumbers, crusty bread , cheese, beer and wine followed by an after dinner liqueur!! . . . did I mention that Charo is a professional chef!!

Charo and Antonio also treated us to a trek to Cueva del Gato (Cat’s Cave) which is nearby in the mountains.  It is an extensive cave system with many underground lakes and deep subterranean passages.  The information board notes that to get from one end to the other (about 4km) one must swim across 25 lakes and the deepest parts are over a 1000 meters.  Needless to say, you need special permission and a lot of spelunking experience to even head on in, but the surrounding area has spring water pools and is very beautiful.

The main entrance to the park is through this arch which supports the railway bridge

On our way home we stopped at this beautiful Hotel

We have also kept busy supplying LOTS of water to 3 horses in a field just below our apartment.  Someone has left them there to graze but no access to water.  We became concerned and so started bringing down water every day.  We are on a steep hill, so this is a major cardio workout. No one else seems too concerned but in this heat, we think it’s a serious problem.  We are trying to work through our host Charo with a protection agency to get them moved somewhere where they have proper access to food and water.  We hope they will be ok after we’ve gone.

we’ve had to run the gauntlet past these guys everyday while taking water to the horses

I think that’s about it for activity and it’s about it for us in Spain.  We want to come back obviously but with the world they way it is now, we don’t have any immediate plans.  They would most likely get cancelled anyway.  Europe is planning on banning Americans from entering the EU…hopefully they don’t lump us Canadians in with that.  People are not going to want to travel anywhere anyway, if masks are mandatory and 2 week quarantines await them.

So, Alberta is the next stop after we do our 2-week prison term when we get back. And I bet THAT is NOT going to fly by.
