Yes, this blog is coming in parts.\u00a0 Unlike the hordes, which seem to come as one whole enchilada wherever we go.\u00a0 Granada to be fair is about a third the size of Cordoba, so this city can absorb the tourists a little easier, and most of those are taking in the sights of the old Moorish\/Roman area.\u00a0 I won\u2019t however, be complaining about the weather for a change.\u00a0 It was, when we arrived here, wait for it\u2026.29 degrees.\u00a0 Nice!<\/span><\/p>\n

The bus ride here from Granada was easy.\u00a0 Two and a half-hours up the winding road through terrain that could have been a duplicate for BC\u2019s interior.\u00a0 Dry, with scrawny plants and cacti, parched desert hillsides and outcroppings, and a whole lot of nothing.\u00a0 Instead of the Okanagan fruit trees there were thousands of square kilometers of olive trees as far as the eye could see.\u00a0 All nicely cultivated.\u00a0 How do they harvest this many plants?\u00a0 And who eats all those olives?\u00a0 Dunno.\u00a0 Questions better left for a six-pack evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, for day one we followed the hordes around old town and checked out the Roman ruins, mosques, and cathedrals.\u00a0 We blended right in; they didn\u2019t suspect a thing.\u00a0 Spain is full of old stuff, which is why the tourists are here, and Cordoba is no exception.\u00a0 At one point, a thousand years ago I am told, Cordoba was the largest city on the planet.\u00a0 And like Granada, there are relics here from Moorish times as well as from Roman times, with Christian times layered on top.\u00a0 As we crossed the Roman bridge that enters the walled inner city we were standing on foundations that date back to the 1st<\/span><\/sup> century AD.\u00a0 The inner city is a typical maze of narrow streets of homes with large cathedrals, mosques, and temples spread throughout.\u00a0 These days, even though the architecture hasn\u2019t changed, the homes have become condos, boutique hotels, tapas bars and souvenir shops.\u00a0 The Romans would have been horrified. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tomorrow we will poke around some other areas of Cordoba.\u00a0 It\u2019s a typical city like any other, with shopping malls, office and government buildings, parks and green spaces, but it has a lot of really cool old stuff as well.\u00a0 Kind of like Vancouver with it\u2019s Gastown area.\u00a0 Well, maybe not so much.\u00a0 Not so much like anything in Canada actually.\u00a0 If you want to see \u2018old\u2019 stuff, it\u2019s here in the \u2018old\u2019 world.<\/span><\/p>\n
