So, we had\nour flights booked months ago, a non-stop from Edmonton to get us into Halifax\nmid-afternoon.  Not too long and not too\nmuch jet lag like we have with the European flights.  September 7th<\/sup> and the late\nsummer\/fall weather should be nice. \nKarma.  It\u2019s laughing behind your\nback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans\nchanged obviously.  We were due to land\naround 3pm just as Dorian\u2019s eye was to pass over Halifax so the airline wisely\ncancelled our flight and rebooked us the following day.  I was a bit bummed though. After earthquakes,\nlightning, and volcanos in Guatemala and lightning, tornados, and exploding\nmeteors in Alberta, I kinda thought being in a hurricane might be a nice\naddition to the \u2018Holidays in Hell\u2019 bucket list. \nIt was probably for the best though. \nWe got into Dartmouth the next day and were lucky enough to get power on\nin the airBnB an hour before we arrived. \nSome places had to wait 6 days for power.  Overall though, the damage was minimal as far\nas we could see.  Some roof damage, a lot\nof downed trees and debris on the streets, and of course the wrecked crane in\ndowntown Halifax.  Seems it’s become the\nnumber 1 tourist attraction here though. \nIt\u2019s going to be interesting to watch how they take it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built in 1803, the Halifax Town Clock is a major landmark built on the eastern slope of Citadel Hill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The\nHalifax\/Dartmouth area is very picturesque, quaint comes to mind, and sits\nwithin a lovely harbor which is home massive shipping docks, cruise ship\nterminals, and the CFB \u2013 Halifax HMC Dockyard.  Naval history abounds here as Halifax was a major\nhub in WW1, a staging point for WWII North Atlantic operations and the British,\nin the 1700 and 1800s, built quite a few naval defensive forts to protect their\ninterests.  The famous Bluenose was\ndesigned here and built in nearby Lunenburg by native Haligonian, William Roue.\nNeither are large as cities go but they have a lot of charm and the people are\nextremely friendly.  And if you want to\ngo to school, Dalhousie is close by, as is St Mary\u2019s, University of King\u2019s\nCollege, NSCAD arts University, and St. Francis Xavier and Acadia University are\nnot far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorian\nnot-withstanding, our stay here has been pleasant and the weather almost\nperfect with lots of sun and low 20s temperature.  The last hurricane, Juan, came through in\n2003 and caused a bit more damage and there were fatalities in that one.  Not pleasant to go through so we\u2019re told and\nhopefully it\u2019s a least another 15 years or more before the next one.  Climate change may have a say in this\nthough.  Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s worth\nmentioning that Halifax has had it\u2019s share of \u2018disasters\u2019 besides hurricanes,\nnotably the infamous WWI ammunitions explosion in the harbor in 1917 which flattened\neverything within a 2.5Km radius including the entire Halifax harbor-front. This\nevent, along with the subsequent tsunami and fires, killed almost 2000 people. FACT:\nThis was the largest man-made explosion ever until the Hiroshima A-Bomb.  So, bye-bye Dorian.  You were a non-event by comparison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
